Qualified special education teachers are needed now more than ever. Our state faces special education teacher shortages as seasoned veterans prepare to retire and fewer individuals are entering the profession. A recent study found that 16% of Nebraska’s special education teachers plan to leave the field prior to retirement and 21% were unsure of how long they would remain in the profession. These statistics have very real implications for students’ learning and growth — and the future of our state.

The Get SET Nebraska program is here to help! We know that you are busy and may not have the time or resources to build necessary systems or programs. Taking advantage of Get SET Nebraska — a program developed by the Nebraska Department of Education and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln — can save you time, provide on-demand resources, and make it easy for you to support special education teachers and keep them in classrooms.

Why should you consider joining Get SET Nebraska? Here are six ways your school or district can benefit from joining the program.
  1. Get SET Nebraska offers an on-demand Administrative Leadership Academy that fits your schedule.
The program gives you easy access to evidenced-based retention strategies. All content is delivered virtually, which means you can set your own pace and engage in the program “on demand” when it works best for you.
  2. Get SET Nebraska is adaptable for your school/district.
Materials can be adapted to your specific needs and goals, regardless of the size of your school/district. Whether you lead in a rural and urban setting, the program can be adapted to meet your district’s needs.
  3. Get SET Nebraska gives you tools to lead a customized, action-oriented retention plan.
Support and resources are available to help you plan for implementation of retention activities. You’ll leave the Administrative Leadership Academy with a strategic plan that outlines simple, action-oriented steps.
  4. Get SET Nebraska offers a ready-to-use mentorship and induction program.
The program includes a fully packaged special education teacher induction and mentorship program to use in your school/district. Through Get SET, you’ll have support for creating work arrangements for mentoring, which includes pairing an early career teacher (mentee) with a professional level teacher (mentor).
  5. Get SET Nebraska can enhance climate and culture in your school/district.
Support and resources are available to build positive relationships and personal connections among all members of your team. Throughout the program, you will develop teacher leadership through empowerment.
  6. Get SET Nebraska pilot schools are eligible for team member stipends.
Your time is valuable and financial resources are limited. It is important to help remove potential barriers to your participation. Participating schools or districts may qualify for a $1,500 subaward from NDE.
